A significant portion of therapy my practice involves working with children, adolescents, and adults who are struggling with hair pulling (Trichotillomania) or skin picking (Dermatillomania). This topic is particularly close to my heart, because I have family members that have these difficult challenges. Although those experiences have helped me understand the human side of the pulling/picking struggle, it's also true that each person has their own unique road to travel and each one needs their own tailored approach. I have more than a decade of experience and training in working with this problem and continue to stay abreast of any new knowledge or treatment in this field, including theories regarding its causes and possible ways to address it. My therapy techniques with clients are tailored to the needs of the particular person, and can include a combination of techniques - addressing awareness issues, competing behaviors, relaxation techniques, and emotional processing. Underlying all of our work is the knowledge that the person is so much more than their problems, and that joy is possible - even when we struggle.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Habit Reversal, Comprehensive Behavioral Model for Trichotillomania and Skin picking, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, BSFF ("Be Set Free Fast) and/or Shame reduction work.
