Hair pulling and eating

all my life I've pulled hair out and eaten it.
I am starting to worry it will cause health issues and im trying to stop.
Im so embarrassed by it. Who would understand without thinking im odd.
I've got mental health issues and was in care as a child so I do wonder why it started . I suppose I need to speak to a doctor.

Hi,

You're not alone. I've been doing the same for maybe 5 years now. Let me know if you want to talk more; I don't talk about my struggles with trichotillomania, and I've never met a person with trichophagia, which makes me feel sort of lonely. Take care!

Hi Kitty,
I have done the same thing for the past 18 years (since I was around 9). I think the best thing to do is tell your doctor and therapist if you have one. Usually if the hairs are small enough you can pass them without any health consequences, but if you’re eating large clumps of hair there’s the potential to cause a blockage. Your doctor can tell you what symptoms to look out for, but otherwise it’s more of a therapy thing.
Take care, I share the struggle too.
