Trich at school

I'm only 14 and living with trich. None of my friends know and I'm finding it really hard as I don't really fit in. This is because to be popular you need to wear your hair down and flick it around 24/7. I don't have the capability to do this! Any advice as to how I should get through it? Or atleast get through the stress?

Hi Isobel33, thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having such a challenging time with trich. I recognize the added difficulty of being a teenager at school and the importance of acceptance and belonging with your peers. You mention that your friends don't know, do your parents know? Are you receiving any professional help for pulling? Do you have any friends you trust enough to confide in about your problem? I recognize talking about it is not easy, but having support is a very important part of recovery. I do not know the extend of your pulling or the details of your pulling patterns, so I am not able to make any specific recommendation, but hair extensions or wigs are often an option explored by teens to boost confidence in social situations. Is that something that is accessible to you?

Does ANYONE know about your trich? CAuse carrying it all inside adds a lot to your stress. I know from my experience that when I told about my condition to someone, I felt much better.

I'm 26 and understand the pressure you are feeling. When I was your age specifically it was one of the less pulling times in my life since this started but I did have a hard time in college.

It's hard. I just learned how to hide it the best I could. I pull from the inside so that I can wear my hair up without being noticed. I can sometimes get away with halfup and I almost never wear my hair down right now.

Do your parents know about your pulling? I got married in September and I used clip in hair extensions and pulled off a half down look. They were pretty expensive tho. Like $150 I think

I wear a lot of head bands. Try a lot of different hair products.

This is something I struggle the most with right now. Hang in there !!

My advice is don't worry about being popular with trich not only should that be the least of your worries right now but you dont want to be popular and have trich. Just because of the fact that you will have alot of extra attention on you that you might not want in the future. If things get worse and with the chances, it gets worse before it gets better. In the long run you're better of without being popular cause alot of the "popular" kids are fake and with trich you will quickly find out who your real friends are and it isn't going to be them. Usually the "popular" kids are the ones who bully, spread rumors, and think they are better than everyone else. Why would you want to be around those kind of people anyways? Those "popular" kids are going to be the first ones to say something about a bald spot and spread it around having everyone think you're a freak (when/if it shows up) and the last ones to be your friend after that.

Hi my dear, please get help as soon as possible...it's not easy to cope with trich and very soon , the bald spots will begin to show....you are still very young and I've read that treatment at your age is so much easier...don't take this lightly and think it will just end as easily as it started.ghat was my own mistake growing up and I have to tell you it's almost ten years since I made that statement and I'm lobbing with the repercussions...I am still pulling my hair at the age of 22...I don't wish this for anyone, not even my enemy...so please....do get help now...it's hard to talk to people but you'll regret it if you don't ...I practically cry myself to sleep most nights...don't let this happen to you too..take care
